Beware of new crime hotspot

Residents and motorists were warned to be cautious on the R566 in Pretoria north after attacks and robberies.

Resident Mpumelelo Mahlangu said his 30-year-old brother was held at gunpoint at an intersection in the road last Wednesday.

He said the men came out of nowhere and jumped into the vehicle.

“One got on the passenger side and two climbed onto the back of the bakkie. They instructed my brother to drive. When they got to a veld, they assaulted him and demanded his bank card and PIN number,” he said.

He said some of the men managed to draw money and upon returning they continued to assault his brother before tying him up.

“The men didn’t flee with the bakkie as my brother told them that he pressed the panic button to alert tracker of his whereabouts. He managed to get to Akasia Hospital where he was immediately helped,” he told Rekord.

The men fled with a total of R1 000.

Soshanguve resident Jeremiah Mokoena (42) said he was cycling on the R566 towards Rosslyn two weeks ago around 17:30 when he was confronted by three men near the Jwaga squatter camp, he was confronted by three men.

“I initially thought they were crossing the road but then they approached me. One of them struck the bicycle handles with a big rock and I fell to the ground. The other two took the bike and they all fled,” he told Rekord.

He said the bicycle was valued at R12 000.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Rebecca Phatlhane urged motorists to be vigilant and cautious.

“This place has become a hotspot, even though police are constantly patrolling. Motorists should be careful and not stop for anyone. Crime is increasing in the area,” she said.
