Patrollers snuff out cable theft
Buchan Street patrollers keeping cable theft at bay.
One dedicated team of residents in Buchan Street in Valhalla has managed to effectively eliminate the scourge of cable theft in their street.
Brendan Lubbe, one of the residents patrolling his street at night, said the need for such a group arose two years ago, when there was a spike in this particular crime.
“Cables were stolen at least once a month,” said Lubbe.
“So, a group of between 15 and 20 residents came together two years ago, and formed the Buchan Crime Patrollers. We drive around and look out for suspicious activity in the street.”
In these two years the group has successfully discouraged would-be criminals, with only two theft attempts made since their inception.
Lubbe said the group’s successes are easily replicable by any other community patroller group.
“What made this successful is that we are a proactive, and not a reactive group. We also report any crimes to the local CPF and to the police.”
Ward councillor Ina Strijdom has praised the patrollers for their fantastic work.
Strijdom noted that thanks to the efforts of dedicated patrollers like those in Buchan Street, and the work of the Tshwane metro police’s ‘Warrior unit’, cable theft has decreased dramatically.
“We can only thank these people for the hard work they continue to do voluntarily to curb this crime in Centurion.”
