How to stay safe during a robbery

Police offer advice to shoppers.

Police have advised shoppers on how to stay stay safe during robberies following yet another armed robbery at Mall@Reds in Centurion.

A gang of at least five men looted the Heide-Marie Jewellers at 18:24 on Monday evening.

They fled and are currently being hunted by police.

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma has offered shoppers advice on how to stay safe during robberies.

“If a store or restaurant is robbed, it is best to flee the scene. Do not confront the robbers, as they are most likely armed and dangerous,” Huma said.

She advised shoppers to hide in a safe spot, and inform the nearest security guard as well as the police of what is happening.

She also advised shoppers to remain vigilant at all times and to report suspicious activity.

This is the second robbery within about three months at the jewellery shop.

On 7 November 2015, the store was robbed by five armed men. A shootout ensued and an ADT response officer was wounded. One of the men was apprehended by police.

Orange Fox security spokesperson Vanessa Jacobs said the two robberies were not committed by the same gang.
