Suspect arrested for business robbery

One suspect arrested in connection with a business robbery.

A man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, in connection with a business robbery in Rietgat.

The suspect was arrested at Nellmapius, Extension 1, corner of Pretoria Road and Lories Fontein Street.

According to the Silverton police spokesperson, Captain Jan Sepatu, private investigators employed by cigarette maker, British American Tobacco were driving in Pretoria when they spotted Toyota Quantum they identified as the one involved in a hijacking of a cigarette truck in Villier recently. When they tried to stop it, it sped off prompting a high speed chase.

“The Toyota Quantum was cornered at the entrance to Nellmapius Extension 1 and arrested one [man was arrested] while the other four fled the scene on foot,” said Sepatu.

Police were called, and upon searching the car, found an unlicensed firearm, stolen cigarettes, powder soap and airtime vouchers.

Further investigations will determine if the Toyota was involved in other robberies.

The suspect will soon appear before the magistrate court soon.
