Three TUT students attacked by criminals

Two other students were brutally attacked near the Tshwane University of Technology during robberies on Thursday.

Three Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students were hurt in separate attacks on Thursday at a Pretoria West railway station near the campus.

Two of them were in a critical condition in hospital, said TUT spokesperson Willa De Ruyter.

In the morning, a 20-year-old student was shot and wounded in the chest when he was robbed by three men around 11:00.

In the afternoon, two students were stabbed multiple times in what appeared to be theft-related episodes.

“All three were admitted to hospital. Two of the students are in a critical condition,” De Ruyter said.

TUT vice-chancellor Professor Lourens van Staden expressed shock and concern and extended his condolences to the families of the injured students.

“The university will monitor the condition of the students and provide support as far as possible,” he said.

TUT management will urgently engage with Metrorail to mitigate the situation and ensure that the train station is safe guarded.”

Police could not provide further details of the incidents at the time of publishing.
