Zinhle’s body still with forensics
Mamelodi residents unite following the death of Zinhle Ndlala.
Thoko Ndala, whose missing nine-year-old daughter was found dead two weeks ago, is not nearer the closure she craved for through the more than 30 days her little angel was missing.
Thoko told Rekord she was still waiting for police forensics to release her daughter, Zinhle’s body for burial.
Thoko said: “There is nothing the family can do except wait for forensics to finish, then we will set a date for the funeral and inform the community.”
Zinhle’s death united the residents of Mamelodi in mourning last week Thursday when they packed the Rethabile community hall last for her memorial service.
The memorial service was attended by ANC members, ANC women’s league, church groups, biker clubs, pupils from different schools in Mamelodi and the residents – some having to stand outside.
The body of “the ever-smiling” nine-year-old girl, as several speakers at the memorial remembered her, was found in a ditch not far from her home on 12 February. She had been missing since 4 January.
Community representative Hendrick Mashao said at the memorial: “The ever-smiling little girl is young hero and a leader in Mamelodi because she managed to unite the whole of Mamelodi. “We are here to celebrate the life of Zinhle whom we wished to see grow and lead the community. But we are saying enough is enough and hands off our children.
“We are going to work together with the police and are asking God to intervene and protect the little ones of Mamelodi.
“At the end of the day, the law will take its course because the person who committed this crime is among us.”
The residents vowed to keep Mamelodi safe for children to play freely.
Sarah Mawelo, a grade 7 pupil from Zakhele Primary School, recited a poem for Zinhle, and church groups prayed for peace in Mamelodi.
Forensic tests were still under way to identity her but Thoko said she had positively identified her daughter at the mortuary from the clothes she was wearing and the hairstyle.
Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said the police were still busy with the forensic tests and could not confirm if the dead girl was the missing Zinhle.
