Petrol attendant hit by flying petrol pump

Engen petrol attendant still in hospital after being hit in the head by petrol pump nozzle.

A petrol attendant was hit in the head by a flying petrol pump nozzle in Centurion on Thursday night.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, paramedics said.

The accident happened around 19:30 at the Engen garage along Nellmapius Drive in Irene.

Garage owner Muzi Gama called the injury “an unfortunate accident”.

“The customer had just paid and assumed that the attendant had finished dispensing the fuel. He then drive off,” he said.

“Unfortunately the pipe was still in the vehicle, and pulled apart. A piece then recoiled and hit him in the head.”

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the attendant sustained serious injuries.

“He was stabilised on scene and taken to a nearby hospital,” said Botha.

Gama said a full investigation into the accident by Engen and the department of labour was underway.
