Criminals use cemetery as base
Ward councillor warns residents to stay alert at Centurion cemetery.
The Centurion cemetery is being used as a base by criminals attacking and robbing houses in the vicinity, says DA ward councillor Peter Sutton.
He said this week the graveyard ran along the N14 and was flanked by houses on the far end of the entrance. It is easily accessible from the highway.
“The main problem is that even though there is a security guard on duty [at the gate], criminals still find a way into the cemetery,” said Sutton.
“Most recently, house robbers managed to get inside the cemetery, break the fence between the cemetery and the houses, knock down a concrete wall, and rob a house.”
Sutton urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to report this to the local CPF (Lyttelton sector 1 CPF) and the police.
“Another thing to keep a lookout for is rope that has been spun between palisades, especially at the cemetery,” said Sutton.
“This rope is used as a makeshift ladder to easily climb over the fence. Vagrants climb over to gain access to the cemetery to steal water.”
Sector 1 CPF head Hugo Erasmus said those who broke into the houses next to the cemetery also targeted other homes along the N14.
“Residents need to be cautious and report any crime or suspicious behaviour to the CPF. We will soon meet with police to discuss a way to address these issues,” he said.
