Cop killers appear in court
The men accused of killing a Pretoria police officer appeared in court on Friday.
Two men accused of shooting and killing a Pretoria police officer appeared in court on Friday for bail application.
Constable Max Lekalakala of the Silverton police flying squad was killed during a shoot-out between police and five men on the N4 freeway near Mpumalanga on Wednesday morning.
Three of the five suspected criminals were shot dead while the other two were taken to hospital.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the duo, Lucky Madiba (20) and Mpho Mohlala (19) appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court for bail application. The case was postponed to 11 March.
“The men face several charges which include murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he said.
On Wednesday, Mulaudzi said the Silverton flying squad spotted a suspicious looking vehicle around 01:45 and stopped it.
“When police approached the vehicle which had five occupants in it, they were greeted by a hail of bullets, which left Lekalakala fatally wounded.”
“The police retaliated, killing two suspects instantly. Another suspect was certified dead on arrival in the hospital,” Mulaudzi said.
