Police raid illegal shebeens in Winterveldt
An operation by members of Loate SAPS together and the Tshwane metro police resulted in the arrest of illegal shebeen owners in Winterveldt at the weekend.
Several shebeen owners were arrested when police raided illegal taverns and shebeens in Winterveldt at the weekend.
The operation conducted by the Loate SAPS and the Tshwane metro police resulted in the closure of some illegal shebeens and taverns ìn parts of Mabopane, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa.
About six crates of beer and several litres of cheap wine were confiscated from a shack in Winterveldt during the raids.
Police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu said the targeted shebeens had been problematic for several months.
“There has been some concern by the residents that some of these illegal shebeens were contributing to the growth of crime in the community,” said Chabangu.
Chabangu said the operation sought to control the proliferation of drinking places in residential areas and to crack down on retailers and distributors who supply illegal shebeens.
“We want to appeal to liquor traders to apply for licenses to stay on the right side of the law. We will be continuing with unannounced operations of this nature in the near future, and we hope to arrest more illegal operators,” she said.
