Motorists have been warned to be vigilant along the N14 between Zwartkop and Bronberrick to avoid falling prey to a gang of robbers operating in the area.
Ward councillor Peter Sutton advised motorists not to stop there.
Lyttelton sector 1 CPF head Hugo Erasmus supported Sutton’s warning.
“We have had several instances when people have been attacked when they stop next to the N14,” he said.
“A man was tied up and left next to the road. He had been beaten, robbed and both his legs stuffed into one of his pant legs.”
Sutton said the matter has been reported to both the Wierdabrug and Lyttelton police stations, but no breakthrough had been made.
Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma called on motorists, no matter what road they are on, to exercise caution.
“Always be on the lookout for suspicious activity, especially on quiet roads and when stopping at traffic lights and stop streets at night,” she said.
Sutton said: “[Though] it hasn’t been confirmed, I suspect the people who have been using the Centurion cemetery as a throughway to break into houses in the area are involved the highway robberies,” he said.
Rekord previously reported robbers were using the Centurion cemetery as a hideout and a place from which to spring attacks on residents.
The Sutton said: “Most recently, house robbers managed to get inside the cemetery, break the fence between the cemetery and the houses, knock down a concrete wall, and rob a house.”
