Hosepipe assault by teacher probed
The department of education to take action after allegations of a teacher hitting a child in the face with a hosepipe an Eersterust primary school.
Disciplinary action is being considered against a Pretoria teacher who has hit a pupil with a hosepipe.
The Gauteng department of education said it was extremely disappointed by the conduct of a primary school teacher at Nantes Primary School in Eersterust.
Winray Daniels, an 11-year-old grade 6 pupil, said his teacher hit him in the face with the hosepipe last Thursday.
“The class was making a noise and I was also talking. I looked down into my book and when I lifted my head, she threw the pipe at me,” Daniels told Rekord.
He said he started to bleed and was left with a blue eye.
His mother Raydene said the teacher had admitted using the hosepipe to quieten her class.
“We had a meeting with her and the principal on Friday. She admitted to the incident and also said she often uses the hosepipe to get the pupils attention.”
The department’s acting spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, said the matter was referred to the department’s labour relations unit for appropriate disciplinary action.
“Corporal punishment no longer has space in schools and any educator found to have administered corporal punishment will face charges of assault which could lead to the educator being dismissed.”
He said schools were empowered through the SA Schools Act to develop their own disciplinary code as an alternative to corporal punishment.
“Educators should at all times lead by example to ensure that learners mirror their conduct in creating safe school environments which are conducive for effective teaching and learning.”
