Metro cop in critical condition after shooting

A Tshwane metro police officer is in a critical condition after a shooting which occurred on Tuesday morning.

A Tshwane metro police officer was shot and seriously wounded in Gomorra informal settlement on Tuesday morning.

Best Care Ambulances spokesperson Xander Loubser said he was hit four times.

Paramedics were alerted around 11:20 on Tuesday.

“Best Care Ambulances were called to a shooting at Gomora rural settlement in Kirkney. On arrival we found that a metro police officer had been shot four times by an unknown suspect,” said Loubser.

“The officer was in critical condition. We stabilised him and rapidly transported him to Muelmed Medi Clinic.”

The officer was still in theatre by 14:00.

Civil rights body Afriforum was also notified of the shooting, said Tshwane spokesperson Tarien Cooks.

“The exact circumstances that led to the shooting were still unclear, but just before midday we received a call that a shooting had taken place,” she said.

“According to the caller, two people, both metro police officers, were shot. One of them was critically injured and had to undergo surgery. The other officer was only slightly injured.”

Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango referred Rekord to Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

Mahamba asked that questions be sent to him in writing.

His had not responded by the time this report was transmitted.
