Three held over metro cop shooting
One of the suspects involved in the shooting of a metro police officer on Tuesday is still on the run, reportedly with the officer's official firearm.
Three men have been arrested over the shooting of a metro police officer in Hercules on Tuesday.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said a search was underway for a fourth man believed to have been involved.
Mahamba said five metro police officers were responding to a complaint about crime in an informal settlement called Gomora in Hercules around 11:00 on Tuesday.
“Upon arrival, the five officers were attacked by four suspects. They shot one officer and assaulted another one.”
He said the injured metro police officers were quickly rushed to the nearest hospital.
“The shot officer is in a critical condition and the assaulted officer sustained minor injuries. Both the SA Police Service and Tshwane metropolitan police rushed to the scene after officers called for backup,” said Mahamba.
“They managed to arrest three of the suspects aged between 28 and 31 years and are currently hunting for the fourth suspect who is still at large with the official firearm taken on the scene.”
Mahamba urged anyone with information on the shooting to call the Hercules police station at 012-377-4112 or the Tshwane metro police on 082-891-8625.
Best Care Ambulances spokesperson Xander Loubser said the officer was hit four times. Paramedics were alerted around 11:20 on Tuesday.
“The officer was in critical condition. We stabilised him and rapidly transported him to Muelmed Medi Clinic.”
The officer was still in theatre by mid-afternoon, said Loubser.
