TMPD arrest 54 for drugs in Brown Street

54 people were arrested for drug dealing and drug possession in Brown Street at the weekend, by the Tshwane Metro police.

The Tshwane metro police have arrested 54 people for drug dealing and drug possession in Brown Street at the weekend.

Tshwane metro spokesperson, senior superintendent Isaac Mahamba said in a statement that dagga, nyaope, crystal meth and drug paraphernalia were seized.

“One toy gun, which is presumably used in criminal activities, was confiscated. These arrests were made during an operation in the area.

Mahamba said the metro police department (MPD) decided to act after it had received complaints of drug dealing on Brown Street from residents.

“We have taken the initiative to tackle this problem head-on. Officers are stationed in Brown Street and conduct stop-and-searches on people and vehicles,” he said.

Mahamba said since the drug-busting operation on Brown Street, a total of 101 people have been arrested, mostly for drug possession.

He also said the metro, other departments of Tshwane metro and other parties would be running an anti-drug campaign to assist addicts.

In a bid for a drug and crime-free city, Mahamba warned drug offenders they would be arrested.

“The TMPD is working very hard to promote zero tolerance to drug dealing and drug use. Anyone found in possession of any drugs or drug paraphernalia is arrested,” Mahamba said.

Last week Thursday, during a joint operation between police and the metro police, four people were arrested in Brown Street for possession and dealing of nyaope, cannabis and crystal meth.

Central police spokesperson captain Augustinah Selepe said this had been a regular joint operation to curb crime in the CBD.
