TUT students torch parts of campus

Violence ensued at the Tshwane University of Technology on Monday when students started fires throughout the campus.

Rubber bullets flew and flames broke out at the Tshwane University of Technology on Monday night when students set tyres alight around the Soshanguve south campus.

The university shut both Soshanguve campuses on Monday following ongoing protests by students regarding fees.

SRC deputy chairperson Sthembiso Ka Shandu said the violence came after security allegedly interrupted their meeting.

“Students were provoked when they tried to have a mass meeting and security fired rubber bullets at them, in an attempt to disperse them. The students got angry and retaliated with stones and security continued to fire rubber bullets,” he told Rekord.

He said security managed to extinguish most of the fires and detained six students.

“Most of the protesters have dispersed. We are trying to bring peace to the students staying in the residents as some fear going out into the campus.”

TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter confirmed the incident.

“The protesting group attempted to set a building alight and security guards dispersed the crowd using rubber bullets.”

Police were not available for comment at the time of publishing.
