Two men were arrested after a high-speed chase involving rapid gun fire in the east of Pretoria on Tuesday morning.
The men were cornered on Watermeyer Street near Nina Street, said Garsfontein spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller.
They were driving in the wrong lane facing oncoming traffic in an attempt to lose the police.
“The two were caught with fire arms and stolen property in their possession,” said Miller.
The men were spotted by police after they shot at a security officer, who was following them in Villieria.
The guard alerted the police, who joined in the pursuit minutes later.
The chase ended in Watermeyer Street in Val de Grace around 11:15 when police cornered the fleeing car.
“Police are investigating charges of attempted murder, pointing of a fire arm and malicious damage to property,” said Miller.
The perpetrators where arrested and would appear in court soon.
Watermeyer Street was closed off and motorists were advised to use alternative routes, Miller said.
Spokesperson of Kilnerpark Security firm Klaas van der Kooi said security officers noticed a strange car driving up and down 32 Avenue in Villieria in the Moot area.
“The white polo was driving around the area constantly, which was suspicious,” said van der Kooi.
“One of our unmarked cars followed the suspicious vehicle and after about 6-minutes the fleeing men fired a shot at the security firm’s car,” he said.
The bullet hit a third vehicle.
The Kilnerpark security firm notified police and one of their vehicles stayed at the scene were the private vehicle was hit.
Villieria police spokesperson Captain Koba Brits said police were still on the scene by noon.
