Police condemn mob justice
Seven suspects face murder charges for taking the law into their own hands.
The Silverton police station has condemned mob justice after a 26-year-old man was brutally murdered by residents in Nellmapius.
Silverton police spokesperson, Captain Jan Sepatu said no one was above the law and no one had the right to beat or kill someone else just because he committed a crime.
“Taking the law into your hands is against the law,” he said.
“Seven men were arrested by the Silverton police for the murder.
It is alleged the seven and the deceased were at a birthday party in Nellmapius.
“The deceased [then] approached the party host and insisted he be given a beer, and when the host refused, a fight broke out,” said Sepatu.
“The deceased took out a knife and stabbed the party host in the upper body then ran away.
“A reveller chased after the deceased and caught up with him a few metres from the party and it is alleged the suspects then assaulted and stoned the deceased,” said Sepatu.
It appears the deceased died sometime after being admitted to the hospital.
The men were arrested and are facing charges of murder and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
Sepatu said residents must report all crime and bring all evidence to the police and justice for justice to be done.
He said mob justice turned the country into a lawless society which increased crime.
