Police hunt Gautrain attacker
Police are appealing for any information on the man that brutally attacked a woman outside the Centurion Gautrain station at the weekend.
Police are hunting for an armed man after a woman was brutally attacked near the Gautrain Centurion station at the weekend.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said a docket was opened on Tuesday.
“The lady was attacked by a criminal with a knife as she was walking. We are investigating an armed robbery,” he told Rekord on Wednesday.
Graphic images of the woman’s bloody wounds went viral on social media this week.
According to reports, Joanne Atkins (53), a Midrand resident, caught the Gautrain to Centurion on Saturday.
She decided to walk to Centurion Mall from the station when she came across a man in overalls on the streets and thought he was a municipal worker.
“He grabbed my handbag, but I put up a fight. And then he said in Afrikaans that he was going to stab me if I don’t give him my phone.”
The man stabbed her several times in the left arm and hand with a large multi-purpose knife.
Atkins was admitted into hospital and discharged on Sunday.
Lyttelton CPF Sector 1 spokesperson Hugo Erasmus said Atkins was recovering well at home.
“She is okay, under the circumstances but very traumatised.”
He said the CPF would be working with the police investigating officer to provide information and manpower for the search.
“We would like to thank the police for their professional work.”
Mofokeng appealed to anyone with information to report to Lyttelton police station on 012-644-8600.
