Cop killers abandon bail application
The two alleged police killers instructed their lawyer to abandon their bail application on Friday.
The two men accused of shooting and killing Silverton flying squad police officer Constable Max Lekalakala have abandoned their bail application.
This after the pair, Lucky Madiba (20) and Mpho Mohlala (19) reappeared at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Friday for the shoot-out that happened on the N4 highway earlier this month.
According to reports, their lawyer Advocate Steve Sekwele told the court he was instructed by the alleged killers not to continue with the bail application.
The reasons for the abandonment were not stated.
The accused were reportedly kept in solitary confinement at the Pretoria central prison and had not yet received medical attention after suffering gunshot wounds during the shootout.
Sekwele said the reasons for keeping his clients in solitary confinement were not yet known and he viewed this as punishment.
On 2 March, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the Silverton flying squad spotted a suspicious looking vehicle around 01:45 and stopped it.
“When police approached the vehicle which had five occupants in it, they were greeted by a hail of bullets, which left Lekalakala fatally wounded.”
“Police retaliated, killing two suspects instantly. Another suspect was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.”
Two were arrested and faced several charges which include murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
