Residents protest over water

Residents claim that the tap water they drink is making them sick.

Angry residents of Hammanskraal burnt tyres as they protested outside Temba Water Treatment Plant on Friday.

The residents claimed the tap water that they drank was making them sick.

They chanted outside the plant demanding to be addressed by the manager.

The march was led by a group called Thlokomela Makhi Forum (TMF).

TMF said the local hospital Jubilee Hospital was full of people suffering from stomach problems caused by contaminated water.

Secretary Molefi Matabane said locals were fed up with drinking dirty water.

He said the quality of their drinking water supplied by the municipal water was not up to standard.

“We decided to come here and present our case to the powers that be,” said Matabane.

This was the second time these residents have marched over the water problem this year when they picketed outside the Temba municipality office.

DA mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga, who led the picket, said at the time the municipality was showing little interest in serving the residents of Hammanskraal.

“We have previously petitioned the metro, as the DA, for clean water in Hammanskraal but it failed to act, claiming there was nothing wrong with the water in the area,” he said.

“The supply of clean water is an essential service. It is a necessity for life and a basic human right. It is the duty of the municipality to ensure that clean water is available at all times to the people of Hammanskraal.”
