Metro explains power station fire

Tshwane Metro offers answers into power station fire.

An electrical cable fault was likely the cause of the fire that ripped through the Pretoria West Power Station on Tuesday.

Tshwane Metro on Wednesday responded to questions about the fire.

Metro media director Lindela Mashigo said it was suspected the fire had been initiated by a cable fault.

He said the metro’s technical team was however currently investigating the root cause.

Mashigo said no residents were affected by the fire.

He said estimated damaged to the power station had not been quantified but the first stage of investigating revealed that damage was minimal.

“The real damage would be determined after all machinery were tested to determine if they were affected.

“Once the affected area is fully accessed, the metro would determine the duration of the repairs,” Mashigo said.

The power station in the west of Pretoria in Buitekant Street was left in flames after a faulty transformer started burning.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said it was believed that the transformer might have initiated the fire.

“From as far as we can tell residents around the power station have not been affected,” Pieterse confirmed.
