Claims of police failing to react promptly to a crime scene in the east of Pretoria should take the form of a formal complaint, police said this week.
“We urge the woman to come forward to the police station and lodge a formal complaint where we would investigate and provide feedback,” said Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Dave Miller.
The allegation is that police did not respond after being alerted to the discovery of a decomposed body in Faerie Glen.
A resident, who asked not to be named, said she called the police after finding two children and a dead man a residence in her complex.
The woman said she called Boschkop police and later Garsfontein, but it was an officer from Hammanskraal who eventually came to her aid.
She said Boschkop police did not pick up her call. At Garsfontein police station a woman told her the station only vehicle had responded another crime.
The resident said she made calls around 14:00, adding both the security guard and the gardener could attest to this.
Miller confirmed police were aware of the allegations made by the woman, but said police could not offer much help without a formal complaint.
Constable Connie Mahanedi, spokesperson for the Borskop cluster, agreed.
“Police could not respond to every negative allegation unless the victim or reporter lodged a formal complaint at the police station.”
Mahanedi said police were always willing to serve the community with pride.
“After the complaint is lodged, the station commander would then issue a way forward where an internal investigation would be initiated.”
She said police would always assist the public in effectively dealing with poor policing.
Two children aged four and five were found with the decomposing body of their father several weeks ago.
They were living with other family members at present, an insider said.
