A man was arrested for perjury in central Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon.
Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said police nabbed the 33-year old man on Stanza Bopape and Wessels streets after he reported he was hijacked on Tuesday.
The man claimed to have been hijacked while driving a red Toyota Conquest.
She said a patrol team was dispatched to keep an eye out for vehicles matching the description of the car.
Malatsi said after a few minutes the patrol team informed the station they had found a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle.
“The officer said they were standing next the Conquest parked next to Tambojie building in Central Pretoria.”
She said security guards were asked who the vehicle belonged to and they all said they saw the owner park it.
“Security guards said they saw the owner parking the vehicle. He was with a woman who was screaming for help,” Malatsi said.
She said a group of men came to the screaming woman’s rescue and assaulted the man, who eventually ran away.
Malatsi said the man fled after he was assaulted, but keys to his vehicle were found at the scene.
The man was found and arrested and would appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
