A member of the Lytcom CPF in Lyttelton was arrested on Monday for assault.
Lytcom sub sector 2.4 chairman Chris Fourie said the CPF member was involved in a fight with a resident at his home in DF Malan Avenue on Friday, 26 February.
“The resident was walking down the road when he spotted the CPF member talking to a female friend in his garden [outside his house]. After verbally abusing the CPF member, the resident started throwing rocks at the member,” alleged Fourie.
The CPF member hit the resident repeatedly with his baton to defend himself.
He sent an SOS and other CPF members came to his aid.
Realising the resident was injured, the other CPF members called the ambulance service which took the man to hospital.
Fourie said the CPF member went to the Lyttelton police station that night to open a case against the resident, but was refused because “he did not have any marks of assault on him”.
“I, the CPF member and a few of our colleagues returned to the police station on Saturday, to open a case of intimidation against the man. This was refused as well,” said Fourie, adding that a week later, he learned the resident had opened a case of assault against the CPF member.
“This is not the first time the resident has verbally abused members of the CPF or members of the public. He once threatened the same CPF member, telling him he would slit his mother’s throat.”
Fourie said he was able to convince the police to allow the CPF member an opportunity to go to another police station to open his case before they arrested him.
“The case was opened at the Wierdabrug police station and later transferred to the Lyttelton police station,” said Fourie.
“On Monday morning the Lyttelton police arrived at the CPF member’s home to arrest him. They took him to the Sunnyside police station, where he was charged.”
Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu confirmed a case of assault had been opened at the end of February, and that there was only one complainant.
He said he could not comment on the allegations that the CPF member was not allowed to open a case. He told Rekord he would investigate and comment at a later stage.
Rekord managed to track down the resident who identified himself only as Byron. He would not speak about the altercation, but did share photos of his injuries.
He had injuries to his face, head, upper body and arms.
