Murder conspiracy councillor appears in court

ANC councillor Joel Malebogo Sindane appeared in court on Thursday on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

An ANC ward councillor has appeared in court to face a charge of conspiracy to murder after he was arrested in connection to a hitlist to kill 11 of his own party members in Mabopane.

Joel Malebogo Sindane was arrested by the Pretoria North police on Tuesday and appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Thursday when his case was postponed to 24 March.

He was denied bail, and will be remanded in custody pending further investigations.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Rebecca Phathlane said: “He was arrested at his home in Mabopane.

“He is facing a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.”

Tshwane ANC spokesperson, Tebogo Joala confirmed that the ANC was aware of Sindane’s arrest.

“We are still waiting for information of what exactly his charges are all about. We will only be able to comment once we know exactly what is happening,” he said.

Joaga refused to comment on the alleged ANC hit-list in Mabopane, saying the party was conducting its own investigation.

The hit-list, which included the name of a Tshwane metro member of the mayoral committee, started circulating towards the end of last year.

According to police, Sindane is the second suspect to be arrested in connection with the list.

The first suspect was arrested on 3 November last year, and charged with conspiracy and incitement to commit serious crime.
