Thieves hide in toilet

Suspected cable thieves huddle together in toilet while police break down door.

Three suspected cable thieves huddled together in a locked toilet in a Murrayfield electricity substation, while police broke down the doors on Friday night.

Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the police and CPF members were on patrol on Friday night when they were informed that someone had broken into the substation.

“They all immediately responded and found the doors of the substation still locked. The officers knocked on the door but got no response. They then decided to break down the door,” said Sepato.

“Inside the officers found a bunch of bundled-up cables and several holes in the ceiling. They called out again but still did not get any response. Two men then climbed into the ceiling to see what they could find.”

While scurrying through the ceiling, one of the men shone his torch through a hole in a ceiling board above a locked bathroom. This was when he spotted the three trembling thieves huddled together in the toilet.

“Police officers then started breaking down the locked door. The men attempted to flee but were caught by one of the officers still waiting in the ceiling,” said Sepato.

“The other two were then apprehended when the officers broke down the door.”

He said all three were charged with burglary with intention to commit a crime and will appear in court soon.
