No escape from the long arm of the law

Police catch two sets of thieves after separate high speed car chases in the north of Pretoria on Friday, and four more later in the day.

Six men are safely behind bars after taking the police on a high speed chase through the north of Pretoria last Friday.

Two are suspected of involvement is stealing cars with the aid of signal-jamming devices and the others are suspected burglars.

Sinoville police and their Hercules colleagues apprehended six people following a tip-off to Sinoville that two men were loitering around a parking lot near a school.

“They were caught [observed] jamming the locks of vehicles at the school and then tried to escape from the police that were called to the scene,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

“Police chased after the two suspects in a white Volkswagen Polo, down Lavender Road.”

Van Dyk said the Polo crashed into a minibus taxi during the pursuit, but drove on.

“They drove towards the old Warmbad Road (R101), where the driver lost control of the getaway-vehicle.”

Van Dyk said the Polo overturned and two men jumped out and tried to run away through an open veld.

“Police caught up with them and arrested them.”

Van Dyk said in the past week, the Sinoville area had been plagued by signal jammers. A signal jammer blocks the signal a car remote control sends to the car to lock doors. When a signal has been blocked, the security alarm is not activated and the doors do not lock enabling thieves to steal the car with ease.

On Friday afternoon, Hercules police busted four other suspects – also after a high-speed car chase.

Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said the police spotted and chased the suspects through the streets in Mountain View.

“The suspects’ car, a white Mercedes-Benz C180, eventually came to a stop and the men tried to escape on foot,” said Huma.

“Police however managed to arrest the four men, aged between 23 and 36.”

When police searched the car they found a plasma-screen TV and a tablet computer, gloves, extra registration plates, a firearm and house burglary tools.

“A case of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and stolen goods was opened. The four will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon,” Huma said.
