A 21-year-old man was arrested after being linked with the murder of a 30-year-old man who was axed, hammered and stoned to death in Winterveldt.
Police spokesperson Petunia Chabangu said the suspect was arrested on Sunday after being linked with the murder that occurred on 31 October last year.
“The deceased man was killed after an aunt screamed for help from residents shouting that a man was trying to rape her. Residents responded to the woman’s screams. They were armed with different objects and broke through the deceased man’s burglar door and started to assault him. They assaulted him until police came to the crime scene and rescued him. He was rushed to Dr George Mukhari Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival,” said Chabangu.
She said the deceased man was hit with an axe, hammer, stones and other objects that were found around the crime scene.
A case of murder was opened after the man was killed.
“An investigation was conducted into the murder and attempted rape. But DNA result proved that the woman had not been raped,” said Chabangu.
