Police in Ga-Rankuwa will be on high alert for crime during the long Easter weekend.
Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi said SAPS have teamed up with Tshwane metro police in an Easter operation aimed at heightening crime-fighting efforts this weekend.
He said the focus of the operation is to clamp down on opportunistic crime and enforce road safety during this period.
“The operation officially started on Wednesday and continues until Easter Monday. Several people were arrested on the first day of this operation which was conducted at various hotspots in Ga-Rankuwa,” said Nkoadi.
“A total of 56 traffic tickets were issued to motorists in violation of road rules. Some were issued with tickets for reckless driving, expired licence discs and driving without proper permits,” he said.
The operation, which included stop and search activities, was conducted on Mabopane Highway, and the R566,” he said.
Seven illegal immigrants were also arrested.
Nkoadi appealed to motorists travelling to different destinations around the country to exercise caution.
“Please don’t drink and drive, speed kills,” he said.
