New info on road rage altercation

The firearm involved was of a Road Traffic Management Corporation member

The traffic officer who had his gun taken by three men in a road rage episode in Faerie Glen was not a member of the Tshwane metro police.

Rekord reported earlier this month three men were arrested after they took a firearm from a traffic officer in a road rage altercation in Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

This was captured on video and shared on Facebook by André Otto.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said it had been established that the firearm was not from one of their members.

“On investigating the matter, it was found the firearm involved was of a RTMC (Road Traffic Management Corporation) member and the relevant agency was informed.”

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said he was aware of the matter, adding that the officer was off duty at the time.

“All competent national traffic police (NTP) officers are authorised to carry firearms when off duty. This is because as peace officers, they may be required to enforce the law even when off duty,” he told Rekord.

Three men had surrounded the traffic officer when they blocked him at the intersection near Glen Village shopping centre on 12 March.

The video shows the men in an aggressive deliberation with the occupants of a white car before one of them points a firearm at the car’s windscreen.

The three men returned to their vehicle with the firearm and fled down Solomon Mahlangu Drive, Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said.

“Police chased them down to Old Bronkhorstspruit Road where they were arrested and the firearm recovered.”

He said the men remained in police custody after appearing in court last week.

“They did not get bail and would reappear soon.”

Zwane said RTMC was still gathering all the facts.

“Once all facts have been established, it will be decided whether a disciplinary is necessary or not.”
