Soshanguve’s most dreaded serial rapist, Sipho Mbokazi, will spend the rest of his life in jail.
This was after he was convicted and sentenced to four life terms in jail plus an additional 213 years.
His sentencing took place in the Pretoria High Court recently.
The 37-year-old rapist embarked on a reign of terror and brutality from August 2012 to April 2013 where he raped more than 10 women.
Mbokazi was sentenced following his earlier conviction on 22 charges — including 10 of rape and nine of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Detective Warrant Officer Jeffrey Sello Lekalakala, who worked on the case for close to two years before arresting the suspect, told Rekord he was relieved that justice had been served.
“It is a relief to his victims. They can find closure and move on with their lives. It is a relief to community members whom he had terrorised for years,” said Lekalakala.
He raped some of his victims twice.
Masked by a balaclava in many cases, he violently raped his victims at either knife or gunpoint after robbing them.
Despite DNA evidence linking him to the crimes, as well as his victims identifying him, Mbokazi disputed throughout that he was the rapist.
Some of the victims said they would never forget his eyes. But his beaded penis mostly gave him away, as many of the victims also identified him through this.
Mbokazi admitted that he used to wear beads on his private parts, but said he had since removed them. But he said this was not to say he was the rapist, as “a beaded penis is not uncommon”.
