Cop killers case postponed

The four were accused of hijacking and killing police captain Kenneth Poortmann.

The case against four people accused in the murder of police captain Kenneth Poortman was postponed on Tuesday at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

They will appear in court again on 10 May.

Sipho Tlou (25), Thabo Mampa (age undisclosed), Themba Mbowane (34) and Steven Meda were accused of hijacking and murdering Poortman last year in December.

The three of four men accused, abandoned their bail applications in January. They were summoned to appear again on 29 March when their case was postponed to 10 May.

Meda, the fourth accused did not qualify for bail because he was an illegal immigrant.

The four men were charged with a schedule six murder, which raised the requirement for bail.

Poortman’s wife Ann, police spokesperson for Pretoria Central police station, broke down when she saw the accused in January.

Poortman learned of her husband’s death when she arrived on the crime scene as part of her duties as a spokesperson.

Her husband’s body was found on the side of the Mabopane highway. He had been shot in what appeared to have been a hijacking.

During the arrest of the accused, the captain’s car and a gun were seized.
