Eersterust residents march against drugs

A march to combat drugs in the busy streets of Eersterust was hosted on Saturday morning.

Scores of young and old Eersterust residents, geared with banners, t-shirts and oodles of enthusiasm, rocked up at the Eersterust Soccer Stadium on Saturday morning to protest against the use of drugs in the community.

The Eersterust police, CPF and numerous other organisations, together with parents, former addicts and support groups attended the march led by South African kwaito musician, songwriter and actor Kabelo Mabalane.

“Two of my boys are on drugs, they come into my house and rob me to get enough money to buy drugs,” said Elizabeth Irleen Martin, an Eersterust resident, attending the march.

“It’s so sad, but a fact of life among the youth in Eersterust.”

The march was hosted by the Eersterust Local Drug Action Committee and concerned parties. It was sponsored by the Gauteng government and the Tshwane metro.

The event included a pro-health campaign to encourage healthy lifestyles.

People were in high spirits as speakers from the Gauteng Anti-Substance Abuse Campaign got the participants excited and ready to take on the problem of drug abuse in Eersterust.

Campaigners danced, shouted and sang to get the march going, creating a picture of a community united in its concern for the youth.

The day gave credit to the residents of Eersterust for taking the issue of drug abuse head-on and creating awareness of the campaign.
