Spike trap used in Centurion heist attempt

CPF says 50 shots were fired during the attempted heist in Centurion.

A trap had been set for the security vehicle targeted in an attempted cash-in-transit heist in Centurion on Saturday night.

Hugo Erasmus, chairperson of Lyttleton Sector 1 CPF, said the would-be robbers had laid spikes on the road in Oak Avenue, bringing a G4S security vehicle to a standstill when its tyres blew out.

“Another vehicle belonging to a security company came around the corner by chance and also drove through the spikes,” Erasmus said.

Chaos then erupted as the culprits opened fire, apparently thinking the new arrival was a back-up vehicle.

Erasmus and others on scene reported that at least 50 shots were fired, but no one was hit.

The attackers retreated shortly after the arrival of the second security vehicle and fled empty-handed in two cars.

No arrests had been made by Sunday afternoon and police investigations were continuing.
