The Ga-Rankuwa police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a university student was killed by a bus in a hit-and-run.
A 27-year-old student at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) was crossing the road, on her way into the university in Ga-Rankuwa on Friday when she was hit.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi confirmed Kyanyisa Mdokwana died on the spot.
“The driver never stopped after this horrific accident,” he said.
Mdokwana was studying for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB), and about to start her honours project.
Nkoadi said the bus belonged to Thari Bus Service.
“Investigations are at an advanced stage. We are getting closer to arresting the suspect,” said Nkoadi.
The bus service’s human resource manager, Kgosi Molefe said he was shocked.
“We only learned about it [accident] when the police arrived at our depot the next day, with video footage, saying they were investigating the case. They said one of our buses had killed a woman,” said Molefe.
“We are cooperating with the investigation and at the moment we are trying to identify the driver.
“We are shocked that the driver did not stop after committing such a horrible incident.
“Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the Mdokwana family and friends at this very difficult time.”
