No arrests after heist shootout
Police left in the dark after a cash-in-transit shootout.
Police said no one has been arrested after a shootout between the driver of a cash-in-transit vehicle and would-be thieves in Highveld on Saturday night.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Hero Gumbu said police are investigating the shootout after a case was opened on Monday morning.
Nobody was injured or killed during the shootout, but it is believed that at least 50 shots were fired.
Hugo Erasmus, chairperson of Lyttelton sector 1 community policing forum (CPF), said the would-be robbers had laid a spike-strip trap on the road in Oak Avenue, bringing a G4S security vehicle to a standstill when its tyres went flat.
“Another vehicle belonging to a security company came around the corner by chance and also drove over the spikes,” Erasmus said.
Chaos then erupted as the culprits opened fire, apparently thinking the new arrival was a back-up vehicle.
The attackers fled without stealing anything. They were seen driving away in a white Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan and black bakkie.
A number of empty cartridges were also found on the scene.
Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC) posted pictures of the trap on it Facebook page and said it appeared to be homemade.
It is a chain, several angle-irons and 15cm nails.
He urged all motorists to be cautious on the road and report anything strange they see to the authorities or on the CCC channel on the Zello smartphone app.
Gumbu urged anyone with information on the shooters to phone the Lyttelton police on 012-644-8600.
