National Assembly to debate Zuma’s removal

The motion to remove President Jacob Zuma will be debated in Parliament on Tuesday.

The National Assembly will debate a motion for the removal of President Jacob Zuma in parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

This follows Thursday’s Constitutional Court ruling that Zuma violated the constitution by not complying with the remedial action set out in a report by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on the upgrades to his private Nkandla home.

The motion was brought by Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane.

Many other parties and organisations have also called for the Zuma to step down or the ANC to recall him.

On Friday, the president apologised to the nation in a live address, saying he had not knowingly or deliberately violated the Constitution.

ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe said the party continued to support Zuma, and that the president had humbled himself when he apologised.

The debate will start at 14:00.
