Malema should lay complaint, Police Minister said

Police have urged EFF leader Julius Malema to report allegations of harassment and intimidation.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has urged Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema to lay charges against the police whom he claimed harassed and intimidated him in Sandton on Sunday night.

Malema took to Twitter and said he was stopped by a white unmarked van and when he got out of his car, rifles were pointed at him. He was immediately surrounded by approximately 10 police vehicles.

Nhleko said Malema should report full details to enable the police to investigate the allegation.

“It does not serve any purpose to accuse police without opening the necessary complaint to allow the police to fully investigate these complaints,” said the minister.

He said the acting national commissioner would take necessary actions against those members should they be found to have acted outside the police code and conduct.

“It serves no purpose but to delegitimise the police to cast aspersions like these without the necessary details and action to enable us to get to the bottom of such complaints.”

The EFF could not be reached for further comment at the time of going to print.
