#OutsourcingMustFall leader in custody after court appearance

Leader of the #OutsourcingMustFall campaign will remain in custody after his court appearance was postponed.

#OutsourcingMustFall activist Vusi Mahlangu appeared briefly in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, on charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice after he claimed to be kidnapped and assaulted last week.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the case was postponed to Friday.

“He will be reappearing for his bail application. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) opposed bail as it needs to verify background information and check [for] previous convictions,” he told Rekord on Thursday.

Mahlangu was arrested on Tuesday, in Eastern Cape.

The Hawks claims Mahlangu lied under oath when deposing an affidavit about his alleged kidnapping. The Hawks said Mahlangu’s statement was inconsistent with information the Hawks’ and witness accounts.

The Pretoria-based student activist mysteriously disappeared in Mthatha last week, and sent a message to his colleagues saying he had been kidnapped, beaten and was kept in a dark room.

On Friday, he resurfaced, and took to Facebook account to claim had been freed from the “dark interrogation chambers”.

The activist led protests at various universities in Pretoria and around the country, calling for the scrapping of the outsourcing at universities and an increase in employee wages.
