Calm restored after violent protests

Police are keeping a close eye on Saulsville following violent protests in the area.

Calm has returned to Atteridgeville following violent protests that took place recently.

Police spokesperson Bonginkosi Msimango said residents of Saulsville informal settlement were throwing projectile which damaged homes in the neighbouring township during a service delivery protest.

“Rocks were thrown around, and tyres were burnt but police managed to intervene,” said Msimango adding that no injuries had been reported.

But according to numerous sources, township residents accused their informal settlement neighbours of stealing electricity from them.

Msimango denied this however saying the township residents only complained about damage being caused to their homes by stonethrowers.

“Settlement residents were throwing rocks which damaged some houses. This infuriated the township residents.”

Police were on hand to restore calm,” he said.

Msimango said no arrests were made but a case of public violence was open.
