One of Centurion’s most notorious caught

Lyttelton police catch rapist-thief with string of cases against him.

Lyttelton police have arrested a notorious thief and rape suspect that had been targeting people in Centurion for several years.

The man has been charged with at least 11 counts of rape and numerous charges of theft.

Lyttelton police spokesperson said the man has been wanted for years.

“One of the first cases against him was in 2010 during the Fifa Soccer World Cup,” said Gumbu.

“The suspect, who pretended to be a car guard, was approached by a woman who wanted directions to the KFC in John Vorster Road. He instead gave her the wrong directions and followed her to West Avenue, where he grabbed her and raped her in a field. He also bit her in the face before he fled with her cellphone.”

The man was never caught and has been raping and stealing ever since.

One of his victims was able to provide information for the compilation of an identikit. It was this identikit that led to his arrest at the end of March.

According to Gumbu the man was arrested by Constable Matthews Mosesi, who was out on patrol.

Mosesi recognised the man, chased him down and arrested him.

“When he was brought to the station we did a DNA profile on him,” said Gumbu.

“This DNA profile helped connect him to a string of other rape cases, including five at the Lyttelton station, three at Olifantsfontein police station, two at Ivory Park station and one in Tembisa.”

It was later also discovered the man was wanted for theft and robberies, using a stolen metro police firearm.

The man has appeared in court for a bail application but his request was denied and he is due back in court soon.

Gumbu praised Mosesi’s efforts in apprehending the alleged rapist and the victims’ bravery in reporting the rapes.

“It seems this man will be put away for a very long time. This was only because of the strong evidence against him,” he said.

“We urge every rape victim to come forward and report it, so that rapists can be caught.”
