Reporting a missing person
Sinoville SAPS gives tips on how to report a missing person, and says there is no waiting period to report a loved-one missing.
Sinoville SAPS recently gave the dos and don’ts of reporting missing people.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk started by debunking the myth of the waiting period.
“Immediately report the missing person to your nearest police station,” said Van Dyk. “There is no waiting period before you can report a person as missing.”
The police will require the person’s full names and ID number and a proper description of the person looks like – a photo would help.
Last known location of the person would guide the police as they begin the search.
“Give the police as much information as possible to help speed up the process of locating the missing person.”
But Van Dyk warned against making false reports.
“Every missing person case is treated as urgent and immediate. The police spend a lot of time and resources investigating – it is important that people do not waste these resources,” he said.
“Do not report a person missing simply because you want to get in touch with them.
“Police resources are needed to find people who are missing.”
