Crime alive in the west
The problems always seemed to return as is no real effort to prevent crime.
Crime and prostitution continue to be a problem in the west of Pretoria.
David Seleka, a resident of Pretoria West, complained to Rekord about the criminal activities, such as illegal prostitution at night.
During the day, criminals targeted young high school pupils at a foot bridge in Vom Hagen Street next to Pretoria West High School.
The crime at the bridge appeared to have abated after the area was cleaned, trees were cut down police patrols were stepped up.
But the criminals were back, residents said this week.
Community policing forum spokesperson Thesigan Pillay said he was aware of criminal activities taking place at the specific bridge.
He said: “Residents are now forming groups to try and protect themselves. I do not blame people for trying to protect themselves.”
He said earlier there had been mob justice in the area when a suspected rapist was attacked by residents.
Pillay said he was awaiting for further information on this matter.
“Police seem to act when there is an outcry [but] ignore follow-ups.”
Pillay said there had been a few police operations, but the problems always seemed to return as was no real effort to prevent crime.
