Beware criminals hiding in graveyard
Mabopane police are warning residents to watch out for criminals hiding in the graveyard.
Police in Mabopane have warned residents to be on the lookout for criminals hiding in the graveyard.
Spokesperson, Constable Petunia Chabangu said the police were investigating cases in which people were robbed or reported their cars broken into at the Mabopane Cemetery, next to Odi Prison.
“Criminals hide in the unkempt graveyard and target people coming to lay wreaths, clean the graves or bury their loved ones,” said Chabangu.
“They break into cars and steal valuables such as handbags, cellphones, remove wheels and other property,” she said.
Police are following up on the information and are hoping to arrest the suspects soon.
She said the search for the criminals was hampered by bushes in the graveyard, and appealed to the public to pay attention to their surroundings.
“People must beware where they park their cars.”
Most of the crimes were reported during the week.
Dinah Hlatswayo of the Soshanguve Community Policing Forum appealed to residents to come together to weed the graveyard.
“If you allow weeds to grow, it becomes a hiding place for the criminals,” she said.
