Beware of scam, says police

Don't be duped, SAPS says.

The police have warned citizens to beware a scam doing the rounds after a case was reported in Rosebank, Johannesburg in January.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said in a statement that fraudsters send their victims an SMS stating a case had been opened against them, when they responded, the fraudsters tried to extort money from them.

“A victim received a SMS stating that a SAPS case had been opened against them and that they had to contact a Constable Baloyi at 060 800 8148. Other random names and different contact numbers were also given,” said Mulaudzi .

The victims were then informed that a warrant of arrest had been issued against them for a traffic violation and that they needed to make a deposit into an FNB account number 62017066201 or ABSA account number 4054021171 to settle the matter.

Other incidents have been reported in Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Free State.

People were urged to rather report receipt of such SMS to the police instead of responding to it.
