Oscar “scammer” abandons bail

The man accused of scamming Oscar Pistorius to appear in court in June.

A man accused of trying to solicit R250 000 from paralympian Oscar Pistorius abandoned his bail application in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Tshifhiwa Rudzhadzi was arrested last month after he allegedly pretended to be an official of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), able to squash Pistorius’ murder case.

Rudzhadzi has remained behind bars since his arrest and is facing charges of extortion and corruption.

Rudzhadzi has a previous conviction, which means that the charges he now faces fall under schedule 5 of the Criminal Procedures Act. The onus was now him to prove why he should be granted bail.

The court also heard that Rudzhadzi has extorted R350 000 from Pistorius, who then tipped off police.

Rudzhadzi was arrested by the Hawks near the high court after he was given R40 000, a trap that was used to make an arrest.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Robert Netshuinda confirmed that Rudzadzhi’s case was postponed.

“He has abandoned his bail application and his case was postponed to the 28th June,” Netshuinda said.
