Motsepe Foundation empowers the youth
The Motsepe Foundation is spending millions to develop the youth through school sports and music.
The Motsepe Foundation has pumped a R117.5 million sponsorship into the department of basic education and the SA Football Association (Safa).
The announcement was made on Tuesday at an event in Pretoria.
The Motsepe Foundation and the department of basic education have partnered on a 10-year plan for the development of schools which will have a focus on sport, netball and choral and traditional music.
The co-founder and CEO of the Motsepe Foundation, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, said, “Sports and music make an important contribution to the growth and development of our youth and helps them become good role models.”
The initiative is also supported by the department of sports and recreation and the department of arts and culture.
During the first five years of the sponsorship an amount of R55 million will be allocated to:
– The Kay Motsepe school’s football cup,
– The ABC Motsepe eisteddfod, choral and traditional music,
– The Kay Motsepe school’s netball cup.
The sponsorship amount for the ABC MotsepeThe ABC Motsepe eisteddfod, choral and traditional music, will amount to R3 million per year and the sponsorship for the Kay Motsepe netball cup will amount to R2 million per year according to the foundation.
Schools that win the competition in each of the nine provinces of South Africa receive prize money of R100 000 each. Over the years Safa has supported and partnered with the Motsepe Foundation and the department of basic education in school football.
The department has expressed its gratitude over the sponsorship.
“As the department of basic education we are extremely grateful to the Motsepe Foundation for this generous contribution which we believe will go a long way in advancing the development of our pupils within the system,” said Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
