Man brutally attacked

A 40-something-year old man was severely beaten and mugged by three criminals on Friday afternoon, who also robbed him of his money and cellphone.

A 40-something-year old man was mugged and brutally beaten by three criminals in Rooihuiskraal on Friday afternoon.

According to OrangeFox security who responded to the call, the man was walking through a veld in the Reeds when he was assaulted and robbed of R1 500 by three criminals.

“The guys beat the man up with a wooden plank. He sustained bumps and bruises on his chest as well as a broken arm,” said OrangeFox spokesperson Ruan Heyns.

Heyns said the man is now stable and was assisted by ER24 who took him to the Kalafong hospital. Wierdabrug sector 2 community policing forum (CPF) responded to the scene.

According to Wierdabrug sector 2 spokesperson, Pierre Viviers the man was going to the bank to deposit money, which he had received for a job he had done for a client.

“The man was walking to the bank to deposit the money. He was then attacked when he decided to take a shortcut through a veld to the bank,” Viviers explained.

He said the criminals escaped with the man’s cellphone and wallet which contained R1 500.

Viviers urged residents to be vigilant, avoid walking around carrying large amounts of money and never take shortcuts by walking through a veld, as that is where criminals hide out.

“People must be vigilant and not take short cuts because criminals hide there. If you are carrying a lot of money with you, it is best to ask for a lift (if you do not own a car) than to walk around carrying money on you,” Viviers said.

Wierdabrug police were unavailable for comment.
