Recovery after assault in fastfood outlet
James Brewer and Chantal Beyers are recovering from traumatic events after they were allegedly assaulted at a local McDonald’s. Watch video as Brewer talks about the assault.
A couple viciously assaulted at a fastfood outlet in Pretoria were still nursing physical and emotional bruises on Friday.
James Brewer (50) and Chantal Beyers (27) said they were attacked by a group of people at McDonald’s Hamilton.
Beyers told Rekord on Thursday she woke up in a pool of her own blood at the outlet after she was punched out cold by an unknown man.
Police are investigating their claim of assault, but could not immediately give comment on the matter.
McDonald’s SA responded to the episode, saying it had launched an internal inquiry to determine the facts of the case.
The couple said they would give their full co-operation in the police investigation.
Earlier, they told Rekord they were on their way home in the Moot, when they stopped at McDonald’s in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Beyers said the drive-through was closed and they went inside to enjoy a meal.
An argument broke out between Brewer and another man, who appeared to be a customer.
Brewer said the man accused him of shoving him and then started to shoulder him.
Brewer said before the scuffle could escalate, Beyers had stepped in to interfere, whereafter the man punched her in the face with his fist.
Brewer said he was not sure how many people had jumped into the fight to help the unknown man attack them, but assumed there were about five to six people with the aggressor.
The couple said none of the staff or a nearby security guard did anything to help them or call the police.
“They only came to mop up the blood on the floor after I came to and James helped me to my feet,” Beyers said.
Her injuries included bruises on her face and the back of her head, along with a fractured bone in her nose.
Brewer’s face was still swollen and he pointed out bruises on his head where he was allegedly hit with an object.
“We chose to go to McDonald’s as it is a family restaurant, where we thought we would be safe,” Brewer said.
As director of Brewers Restaurants, he said any restaurant or outlet should have security in place to keep customers safe.
McDonald’s said: “The safety of our customers and crew is of paramount importance to us and this issue is receiving our full and urgent attention.”
